Teaching about Transportation

Let’s have a look at a range of activities to do in the classroom related to transport.

1) Adjectives, comparatives and superlatives.

Have realia of a range of transport types in the classroom. The learners have to make sentences orally using adjectives, comparatives and superlatives.

E.g.
The aeroplane is the fastest.
The train is faster than the car.
The car is slower than the plane.

You can use 4/5 basic adjectives that can make many sentences. The realia will help learners get on with the task.

2) Aeroplane design

The class has been asked to design a new aeroplane exterior, they have to use blank templates to design a colourful new aeroplane. Learners can work in groups and then give mini presentations on the design of their aeroplanes.

3) Let’s play a guessing game….?

Give the learners clues, they have to work in small groups to guess all the transport types. An alternative for higher level learners is for the learners to make the clues themselves.

It is very big and very fast …….. (aeroplane)
I go to school everyday in my …….. (car)
A lot of people go on the …… (bus) together.
It travels on the water. (a boat)
Using this type of transport is better for your health. (a bicycle)

4) Let’s play paper aeroplanes.

Give each learner a piece of paper or template for a paper aeroplane. They need to fold it accordingly and then write three words on the wing of the aeroplane. The words must all be about aeroplanes. Then ask all the learners to stand at the front and throw their paper aeroplanes. They must collect another aeroplane and read what is written on the wing, this is an effective activity to speak about ‘aeroplanes’ in a fun and engaging manner, it also involves the whole class.
